Aquincum Museum, remnants of a Roman Town

The legionary garrison of 6000 spawned a settlement of camp followers – Aquincum – which, over time, became a Municipum and later a Colonia, the provincial capital of Pannonia Inferior. Enough foundation walls and underground piping survive to give a fair idea of layout of Aquincum, although you\’ll need to pay a visit to the museum and use considerable imagination to envisage the town during its heyday in the second to third century AD. A great concourse of people would have filled the main street, doing business in the Forum and law courts (near the site entrance), and steaming in the public baths. Herbs and wine were burnt before altairs in sanctuaries holy to the goddesses Epona and Fortuna Augusta, while fraternal societies met in the Collegiums and bath-houses further east. The museum contains oddments of the imperium – cake moulds, a bronze military diploma, buttons used as addmission tickets to the theatre – and statues of gods and goddesses.
